‘Don’t forget the people when elected'

Vice-President Joice Mujuru has urged Zanu- PF candidates not to forget the wishes of the electorate who will vote them into office in the July 31 harmonised elections.
Addressing over 7 000 revolutionary party supporters at Mbare’s number five grounds in Harare yesterday, Cde Mujuru warned the party’s candidates against making fake promises to the electorate.
“Zanu-PF is about the truth and its candidates should not make fake promises to the electorate.
“A protest vote is caused by a leadership that divorces itself from the people’s problems,” she said.
Cde Mujuru urged the candidates to emulate President Robert Mugabe who has consistently delivered on his promises since independence in 1980.
“In 1980, President Mugabe promised the people education, hospitals and clinics and the results are there for all to see.
“In 1999, he again promised people the land and he lived up to that promise. Now he is talking about empowerment and indigenisation and that process is already gathering momentum,” she said.
Vice-President Mujuru called the party’s aspiring House of Assembly candidate, Cde Tendai Savanhu, to address the suburb’s perennial housing problems.
“Living conditions in most houses in the suburb are deplorable and not fit for human habitation.
“The MDC legislators who have been representing this constituency for the past decade have done nothing to improve the situation. It is up to you, Cde Savanhu, to show that you have the people’s interests at heart by moving in quickly to address this anomaly,” she said.
Amai Mujuru called on the incoming Zanu-PF leadership to seriously consider parcelling housing stands to the homeless in the area close to Mukuvisi River.
“Even Harare was built on top of a river, so there is no reason why stands cannot be parcelled out on that piece of land that is close to Mukuvisi,” she said to thunderous applause.
Speaking at the same occasion, Cde Savanhu pledged to wrestle away Mbare constituency from the MDC-T, a party he accused of pursuing selfish interests at the expense of national development.
“We are confident of victory. The party machinery in Mbare is well oiled as we did not rest on our laurels after that close defeat in 2008.
“Never again will Zanu-PF be defeated in an election in this constituency,” he said.
Cde Savanhu will square off against MDC-T’s Eric Knight.
