On Saturday evening, July 13, 2013, a Seminole County, Florida jury acquitted accused killer George Zimmerman of second-degree murder charges and all other criminal actions against 17-year-old Trayvon Martin of Sanford.
The case of George Zimmerman is the product of mass demonstrations which swept the United States during the Winter of 2012.
The State of Florida had no intentions of arresting or filing charges against Zimmerman. It was the masses led by the African American people that brought this situation to a political conjuncture where it became a reflection of the ongoing culture of racial profiling and murderous violence.
In the aftermath of the acquittal of Zimmerman millions of people spoke out in horror and protest. Many took to the streets in mass demonstrations and rebellions from New York City to the Bay Area of California.
Pan-African News Wire editor Abayomi Azikiwe was featured on RT world news several hours after the verdict. Azikiwe emphasized that those who defend Zimmerman are the same social forces which support white racist terrorism against the African American people in the U.S.
The release of Zimmerman and the racist comments made by his defense attorneys and some jurors illustrates clearly that national oppression is alive and well inside the U.S. It will take an organized movement to effectively challenge it and remove its existence from the contemporary period.
